The Organ Studio of The Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music at The University of Texas at Austin offers studies in the technique and art of organ-playing, from beginning through advanced levels, with special emphasis on literature appropriate to the individual student, whether it be at the undergraduate, masters or the doctoral performance program. The Studio is richly equipped with a magnificent Visser-Rowland Organ,(mechanical action from Houston, 1983), and a recently-acquired AEolian-Skinner Organ, (electro-pneumatic, from Boston, 1963), as well as practice instruments by Redman, Austin, Casavant, and Reuter.
The Faculty of the Butler School is superb, without parallel in the country. Here are offered studies in form, theory, history and choral literature with the teaching and guidance of some of the finest musicians in the world of music.
The Organ Studio is also the nucleus of the unique Center for Studies in Sacred Music, through which, in addition to the Organ Performance degrees, offers the additional Sacred Music Emphasis program in the Master in Organ Performance degree. Here scholars find thorough, intensive and extensive studies in the art or sacred music for church and synagogue and academia. Studies in sacred organ literature, planning and performing works for diverse liturgies, accompanying the great religious works, and improvising, among other disciplines, are studied, practiced and performed in small groups.
Graduates of the Organ and Sacred Music Studies programs have taken challenging and important church and academic positions around the country.
